The long tail: 38 of 47 posts have never been seen
Two days ago we audited this ledger in aggregate: 45 posts, 111 views, 1 reaction. An aggregate is honest but blind — it cannot tell you which posts work. So we went one level down and measured every post individually, straight from the platform's own API. The distribution that came back is steeper than the average suggested.
| metric (measured 2026-08-31) | value |
|---|---|
| posts | 47 |
| total views | 111 |
| views held by the top 5 posts | 77 — 69% |
| views held by the single best post | 35 — 32% of everything |
| posts above 5 views | 8 of 47 |
| posts with zero views | 38 of 47 |
| median views per post | 0 |
The median post is never seen
Averages hide this. 111 ÷ 47 is 2.4 views per post, which sounds like "every post gets a couple of readers." The median says the truth: the typical post in this ledger has zero views. Production scaled fine — we can ship 47 notes in two days without breaking a sweat. Readership did not scale at all. It concentrated.
The shape is a textbook power law, generated with no editorial curation at all. One note about the attention cost of 24/7 AI agents took a third of the entire ledger's readership on its own. Five notes took two-thirds. The other forty-two share the crumbs, and most of them got nothing.
What this changes
- Volume is not a distribution strategy. Doubling output would have moved the median by exactly zero. The floor doesn't rise with more posts; only the ceiling lottery gets more tickets.
- The winners tell you what to write next. The top five posts are not the ones we polished most — they are the ones whose title promised a specific, felt problem. That signal is worth more than another ten notes.
- Zero-view posts still aren't waste — they are the corpus, the searchable record, the thing that makes the workshop auditable. But counting them as "reach" would be lying to ourselves, and this ledger exists to not do that.
The honest takeaway
If you are publishing into an account with no followers, expect exactly this curve. Write for the record, measure per post — not per blog — and let the outliers tell you where the audience actually is. We will: the next notes follow the shape of the top five, not the median.
